Tremblay's rainy-day shelf

Eight free games to play
when the fog sits on the lake

Some mornings the far shore disappears in fog and no canoe leaves the dock, so Tremblay keeps eight free browser games on a shelf by the woodstove. Three grow a village, a farm or a factory town, two hand you a business, one rewrites the Great War with walking iron Titans, and two send you out among the stars.

Of everything on the shelf, this is the one that feels most like dawn on the lake. A drowsy village sits in a valley the wild has taken back, and you return it to life bit by bit: hack back the tangle, patch up the old buildings and chase quest threads deeper up the valley while fields and workshops keep busy without you.

Anyone after a soft-paced sim with a story thread.

Your first session

Uptasia

Sim Companies key artBusiness & tycoon

Sim Companies

Multiplayer economy sim

  • Desktop browser; mobile app also available
Good for & first steps

Good for: Patient players who enjoy a long-horizon economy.

All eight cost nothing to play; each offers optional in-game purchases.

01

No fee at the boathouse door

Joining any of the eight costs nothing, and the farms, factories, front lines and fleets all come complete without spending a thing.

Each studio does run an optional store for shortcuts or cosmetic extras. Plenty of seasoned players ignore it completely, and most of these games offer household spending caps somewhere in their settings.

02

Pushing off from the dock

Every button opens the studio's own official site in a fresh tab. Industry Idle and Starblast.io begin straight away; the remaining six ask for a short free sign-up with an email address.

Nearly all of them start with a tutorial. Paddle all the way through it, since it shows each menu and the whole economy one stroke at a time.

03

Short paddles and long portages

Most of the eight carry on while the tab is closed: crops ripen, factories hum, markets shift and fleets travel. One visit with morning coffee and another after supper is enough to stay on course.

Keep the quick visits for harvests, build queues and a word with your coalition or alliance. Save a long foggy morning for the big moves, like a new production chain, a fresh province or a raid across the map.

04

Locking the lodge logins

Each login belongs to the studio that runs that particular game, so type it nowhere except the address printed by that studio. A fresh password per game and two-step sign-in, where offered, keep a foggy-morning hobby from turning into a headache.

Studio staff have no reason to ask for your password, ever. Any note promising a pile of free premium currency for your login is bait for the account, so leave it unanswered and flag the sender.

Why these eight made it onto the shelf

  • Every one loads in a plain desktop or laptop browser, so a foggy morning never begins with an installer.
  • Signing up is free wherever signing up exists, and you can go a long way in each without spending anything.
  • Most carry on growing, producing or travelling with the tab closed, so a quick look between paddles still pushes things forward.
  • They run from a sleepy valley to a dieselpunk front line, so there is a pace to match any weather on the lake.

No. A laptop or desktop browser handles all eight, and Sunrise Village, Industry Idle, Sim Companies and Iron Order 1919 offer an official mobile app too, should you want it.

Yes. Signing up and playing cost nothing at all eight, and any purchase inside a game is purely optional.

No. Independent studios build and run them, and each button here leads to the studio's own official page for that particular game.

No. Each comes from a different studio, so registration happens separately at each one, always free. Industry Idle and Starblast.io need no registration at all.

Sunrise Village, Industry Idle, Sim Companies and Iron Order 1919 have official apps next to the browser version. My Free Farm, Uptasia, Starblast.io and Nemexia are listed as browser games, so they sit best on a computer.

Starblast.io launches a match the moment you click, and Uptasia fits a scene or two into a coffee break. Iron Order 1919, Nemexia and Sim Companies reward longer planning.

In several of them. Iron Order 1919 has coalitions, Nemexia has alliances, Starblast.io pits you live against rival pilots, and the markets in Industry Idle and Sim Companies are set by other players. Sunrise Village, My Free Farm and Uptasia are mostly solo, at your own pace.
